Just the FAQ

You probably have questions. We have answers.

Can I teach at University of Phoenix without prior teaching experience?

Yes! Generally, if you’re working in your field of expertise, have a master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited university, and a demonstrated passion for helping others learn you can teach at University of Phoenix.

What kind of work experience do I need?

You’ll need relevant work experience in the course you’d like to teach and a proven understanding of your field (as well as a master’s or higher degree).

Can I teach for University of Phoenix if I only have a bachelor’s degree?

No. University of Phoenix requires all instructors have an advanced degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Will I teach on-campus or online?

Where you teach (online or on-campus) depends on your preference, experience, and what courses we need instructors for when you apply. If there isn't a current opportunity for the online or on-campus course you prefer, please to check back often as our needs frequently change.

As an associate faculty member, how often will I teach a course?

The maximum allowed courses is two classes concurrently. The University cannot guarantee a number or frequency of classes. Associate Faculty positions are considered part-time employment on a contract-to-contract (course-to-course) basis.

How much time does it take to teach a course?

The week of your first class, expect to spend approximately 18 hours on preparation, student assistance and other administrative tasks. After that, you’ll typically spend 10–12 hours per week on instruction.

What type of computer software and hardware
will I need?

Typically, we recommend a computer with: 1.6 GHz processor; 256MB RAM; 20 GB hard drive space; and high-speed Internet connection.

It’s also helpful to have a sound card, speakers, video card, and a monitor set to 1024 X 768 pixels per inch or greater.

How technically savvy do I need to be to teach online?

To teach computer technology you must be an IT expert. Other courses require computer proficiency that includes hands-on knowledge of Microsoft® Office, emailing attachments and accessing online information. Experience with online forums is a big plus, and you may need CD ROMs and/or software more specific to the subjects you’re asked to teach. University of Phoenix also requires all faculty members to install and use an anti-virus application.

Do I need to be a resident of the United States?

Yes. You must live in the United States. If you’re not a U.S. citizen, you must have an unrestricted work visa. You must also present your valid Social Security card for payroll purposes before you teaching your first class.
